Assistant Fire Chief


The City of Colby is accepting applications for Colby Assistant Fire Chief. Fire Department consists of the Fire Chief, Fire Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Service Officer, three full-time firefighters, and up twenty-four paid volunteers. Fire/rescue/hazardous materials is provided for the City of Colby and Rural Fire District #3 encompassing most of Thomas County. 

Duties: Assumes the duties of the Chief during their absence; recommends and enforces fire and life safety codes and related State, Federal, and City codes; Assists with Code Enforcement duties; Establishes  and implements fire safety and prevention programs in schools; Responds to fires and investigates cause and origin, hazardous mater incidents, medical and rescue calls and other emergencies for service and assumes command as appropriate: responds as 24-hour on-call officer in rotation with the Chief and Service Officer.

Experience and Training: any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented with course work or training in basic and advanced firefighting, incident command, fire administration and five years of fire experience including supervisory and inspection; and AA in Fire Science is desirable. Possession of a Class C driver’s license; certification as an Emergency Medical Technician; certified at the Operations level for hazardous materials response.

Salary dependent upon experience, a benefit package consisting of sick leave, vacation, KPERS retirement, and health insurance paid 70% by the city. The city is and equal opportunity employer.
